Applying to AMH Dixon with a Post-Secondary Student

I have graduated high school, or I have completed college coursework.

Applicants who have graduated high school are required to submit before the appropriate deadline:

• An application with an application fee
• Official transcripts showing completion of prerequisite coursework (Click here to download the college course reference grid)
• Standardized testing (Click here to access the standardized testing section in our FAQ)
• Two letters of recommendation
• An official High school transcript, or an official GED transcript sent to the school from the issuing State

Admission Policy
The Admissions Committee, representing the Faculty of the School of Nursing, selects applicants who satisfy the admission criteria and demonstrate the capability of completing the program and becoming registered nurses. The number of students accepted is determined by the committee based on variables, which include the availability of adequate clinical facilities and the faculty to student ratio. Applicants are considered on an individual basis. Written notice of the committee’s decision will be mailed after the decision date.

Application/Acceptance Fees
When filing an application for admission to the School of Nursing, each applicant pays an application fee. An electronic payment (through the Bursar tab), check or money order made payable to the Abington Memorial Hospital Dixon School of Nursing should be forwarded with the completed application. No refund is made after the application is filed. An acceptance fee is required after notification of acceptance in order to reserve a place in the class. An electronic payment (through the Bursar tab), check or money order made payable to the Abington Memorial Hospital Dixon School of Nursing should be forwarded by deadline provided. This fee is non-refundable and is not credited to future tuition payments.

Early Decision

• The completed application deadline is November 15th for the selection process for classes commencing the following August.
• Reviews will be conducted on those with a minimum of five of the nine prerequisite college courses completed, two of which must be science courses.
• Completion of all college prerequisites recommended.
• All early decision acceptances are provisional pending successful completion of any remaining college pre-requisite courses or admission criteria.
• Non-USA citizens must show an official permanent resident card in person for photocopying to maintain on file and complete a G-639 form or other required forms from Homeland Security.
• All applicants will be notified by mail of decision of acceptance, provisional acceptance, rejection, or rollover on or before December 15th.

Preference is given to applicants who meet the following criteria:

• College course level student: a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or higher and satisfactory Standardized testing score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills –TEAS test (see chart below).
• Effective 7/1/09: Those applicants who have an active application on file, with previous standardized testing submitted will be notified to take the TEAS.
• If for some reason the applicant’s scores are older than 2 years and the applicant may benefit by taking or repeating their standardized testing, the DSON reserves the right to make a recommendation or require as part of the admission criteria.

Transcripts
An official transcript (signed and with the school seal affixed) from each school attended must be submitted to the Admission Office. The student must ensure that all final official transcripts are submitted prior to entering the program. The following transcripts are required:

• High School - an official transcript of years completed
• College - an official transcript from all post-secondary institutions attended

Letters of Recommendation
A total of two letters of reference are required.
These letters must be from the following:

• employer
• professor
• advisor
• High School teacher
• High School counselor
• volunteer coordinator
• clergy

Acceptance of College Credits and Other Nursing Program Credits
Candidates’ transcripts will be reviewed for college courses that meet the curriculum requirements for the AMH Dixon SON program.The Admissions Committee of the School of Nursing will determine which courses are acceptable to meet these curriculum requirements. Candidates must have obtained a grade of C or better in all college and a grade of C+ in all nursing courses for acceptance/continuance in the program. Candidates may be requested to submit the course title, number, catalog description, syllabus and course outline for a specific course listed on a transcript.

Applicants may receive credit by examination through successful completion of nationally recognized standardized tests of non-science college laboratory courses within the curriculum. Only students with a C or higher in science laboratory courses from a post-secondary institution can receive credit by examination.

• Anatomy and Physiology I & II courses must be taken within five years of starting the nursing curriculum.
• One course in college math must be taken within five years of starting the nursing curriculum.
