The Abington Memorial Hospital Dixon School of Nursing is dedicated to improving and diversifying the face of nursing by enhancing our recruitment efforts of qualified diverse individuals that possess the characteristics of integrity, responsibility, dignity, scholar, accountability, and humility to become leaders in the profession of nursing. We strive to maintain an academic atmosphere that embraces the culture of all students, is student focused, with a well-rounded faculty that is educationally experienced. Our vision is to provide innovative support programs that utilize forward thinking to support students on all levels. It is our intent to recruit, educate, retain and prepare a student who understands and respects the nursing process while exemplifying excellence in nursing education. By embracing diversity, we will create an academic environment that promotes thinking, interaction and helps students learn from each individual’s cultural, educational, life and learning differences.

Diversity Goals

  • Participate in curriculum design by integrating concepts of multicultural health care issues that are current and represent the needs of a diverse society.

  • Facilitate learning by educating students on cultural diversity and its vital role in nursing practice.

  • Facilitate learner development and socialization by meeting the needs of each student regardless of learning style, culture, educational background, physical needs or challenges.

  • Utilize assessment strategies to foster learning experiences that will expose students to diverse cultures and their health care needs in all aspects of patient care.

  • Evaluate our program for continued progression in providing a culturally competent curriculum, with clinical experiences that build on theory and promote thinking.



  • Evaluate the curriculum for appropriate content that emphasizes the delivery of culturally competent care to all people.

  • Function as a change agent and leader by developing programs that provide support, advocacy, and cultural awareness in the educational environment.

  • Provide exposure to professional and multicultural organizations by encouraging membership and the attendance of professional conferences.

  • Pursue continuous quality improvement in the nurse educator role by utilizing evidenced based practice, research, and demonstrating current knowledge of diversity, societal healthcare needs and trends.

  • Seek continual educational opportunities to improve our multicultural knowledge base in addition to engaging in activities that enhance multicultural learning.

  • Develop an educational environment that fosters respect for all students and faculty while incorporating the need for change and continual growth in conjunction with the diversity mission of Abington Memorial Hospital .
